Paradox behind praising kids : Article by Subha Parthasarathy, Magichive. A must read.

Cheers! Mathangi. Co founder ThinkBag.
Good Morning Dosto:: A Poem for Parents ~
If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd finger-paint more and point the finger less.
I'd do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I'd run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd teach less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.

Game on the Go

Vacation time --> long drives or long days at home! --->kids bored?

A quick rapid fire word game. Age no bar!
Start with any word that kids can associate with. say a pizza. The next player says a word associated with Pizza, say cheese. Then, milk, then cow, etc etc. Game goes on till a player who takes more than 2 counts to utter the next word loses.

Happy Playing!

Looking for something to keep your curious explorers occupied in summer holidays? Try Scratch - new and cool programming model. Recommended age is 8+ but my 7 year old had lots of fun. So, go with your child's interest levels.

http://scratch.mit.edu/

Advocates suggest that individuals who use Scratch at a young age develop a solid foundation of knowledge that can help prepare them for the use of higher level programming languages and math.

Science and Sensorial activity for Young minds

It’s never too early to introduce science to children in the simplest form. Children are curious by nature. Let us nurture this curiosity right from the beginning by means of simple activities/experiments.

The following activity is appropriate for children of age 2+. Make sure you adjust the level of activity (simplify or make it slightly challenging as per the age and readiness of the child) This activity/experiment involves mixing various things in water and observing... which dissolves, which does not, what is the colour of water after mixing etc.
1. First talk to your child that he/she will be performing this activity of mixing        a few things in the water and observing what happens.

2. Show him/her samples of salt, sugar, honey, lemon juice etc and pose a question “What more he/she can think of to mix in the water". ( I got an instant answer of pepper powder which worked out well, because he could see that while sugar, salt got mixed with water, pepper powder did not.)

3. Take water in a few glasses (based on the number of samples chosen).   4. Take one sample at a time. Have the child mix in the sample in water. Ask a question as to what they observe with each sample. Let the child taste the mixed solution. ( Do not use too much of the sample ). Ask the child, how it tastes. For a young child, give the name of the taste so that they can associate. (For ex: salty, sweet etc ).

5. Repeat step 4. with each of the samples.

Finally, help them summarize what they have observed in the activity. This is an excellent sensorial activity too which helps them identify and relate to the tastes.

Science is Fun - Understanding Energy

I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.

-Albert Einstein

Children are naturally born curious with an innate desire to explore the world, learn about the various intriguing aspects and wonders of the world.
Fuel a child’s curiosity and the inborn drive to learn how world works, by enriching his/her environment with simple day to day activities.
What more? These can also become conversation builders with your older children.
Enjoy the themes brought to you by ThinkBag under the series of “Science is Fun” .

Today's theme- Understanding Energy

So how would you explain the concept of energy to your little one, drawing examples from our daily life?
Before you explain any concept or share information with your child, ask a few guiding questions to prompt the child to do some thinking. Then slowly introduce the concept.
Please note that the questions are NOT intended to grill the child but to initiate the thinking process which aids in subsequent learning.
So, start with some questions like these…for example:
So, how do you think the fan moves?
How are able to run? What do you need to run?
What does the fan need to move?
And so on… ask follow on questions based on responses from the child.
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Work can be anything like running, moving, heating etc.
People need energy to do work. Where does this energy come from?
Gadgets or appliances need energy to do work. Ask your child to identify all the devices/objects outside or inside the house that need energy.
Ex: TV, fridge, mixer/grinder, Microwave, computer, Lights, fans washing machine, geysers

Energy changes from one form to another -
For ex: When you turn on the fan, electrical energy changes to mechanical energy.
When you turn on the geyser, electrical energy changes to heat energy and heats the water.
When you turn on the light, electrical energy changes to light energy.

Mechanical energy
Child riding a bicycle is an excellent example.

The main point to note here is that using the above snippets of questions for reference, you as the facilitator enable your child to understand the concept of energy. Take every learning opportunity in your day to day life and draw your child’s attention to it and watch your child experience the joy and fun of learning.
Happy exploring with your child!!!!

Fun with Math at www.think-bag.com

Hello Parent!

Register with www.think-bag.com to give both reading and math experience to your kid.
By registering with us, you become a part of the growing ThinkBag family.  Let us traverse the path of parenthood together.

Today, the food for thought is “Can children learn math the fun way?”

Of course!  How does reading and math go together?

Here is how reading at ThinkBag involves math.  Read a book, Read a magazine, answer the quiz and earn “Reward Clouds”.  Earning and redeeming these “Reward Clouds” has the entire math in it.
Let me share  my experience with my 6 year old son Jayanth.

1        Me : You have 10 “Reward Clouds” now. What will be the total after reading another book?
        Jayanth : 15.

Jayanth : “I need 20 more Reward Clouds to get  “Colour Pencils”. How many books should I read?”
Together, we arrive at the answer of 4.

2.       Upon answering the 4 quiz questions, Jayanth earns 8 reward clouds.
Me : “How many clouds did you earn per question?” With assistance, Jayanth says 2.

Needless to say that each child is different; so go only to the extent your child is comfortable.

Happy Learning.
Best Regards
Mathangi

Launching www.think-bag.com : online children stories and magazines

Hello!  Parents,

Warm greetings to you all. Trust you had a great weekend.

Today, we reach a milestone. Our online stories and magazines are up for your child at www.think-bag.com.

Before we go into the launch details, please take time to read the quote below :

Stories have power. They delight, enchant, touch, teach, recall, inspire, motivate, challenge. They help us understand. They imprint a picture on our minds. Consequently, stories often pack more punch than sermons. Want to make a point or raise an issue? Tell a story. Jesus did it. He called his stories ‘parables’. — Janet Litherland

“Hare and the Tortoise”, “Monkey and the cap seller”, “The thirsty crow “.  Oh! No! We are not taking you on a virtual tour of a zoo. These are the stories that we heard from our parents and grandparents. The thirsty crow (the story where the crow uses stones to raise the water level) conveys science as well as problem solving.

Every child needs knowledge, cognitive, social and emotional development with ability to be independent and appreciate interdependence.  What better way than stories to enable the child experience each of these spokes to complete the circle called life.

Is academic excellence alone sufficient for your child to travel the journey called life? Imagine going on a trip with luggage but no tickets! Stories are tickets to make the journey called life, exciting. Stories can simplify academic concepts through fun-filled narratives.

We started writing stories for our kids and then we thought “Why not reach it to your kids too?”
So, here we are with www.think-bag.com , our online children’s stories and magazines.
Look for Whee! – our story series and Wow! – our magazine series

Happy Reading!
